C-section Recovery and Scar Therapy

If you have recently had a c-section your scar may be feeling tight and uncomfortable. It is very common for a scar to feel as though it is pulling. Deep adhesions that form as a result of surgery may cause discomfort elsewhere such as; your lower back, pelvis and even your upper body. In addition to this, you may find that your scar is raised, red and sore, this may result in you disliking the appearance of your scar and restrict you from getting back to doing the things you enjoy.

As your body heals from a c-section scar tissue will form. Scar tissue is fibrotic and less mobile which can lead to the formation of adhesions, which cause layers underneath the skin to stick together. RESTORE scar therapy involves specialist techniques, which are a non-invasive method of physical therapy, used to treat scar tissue fibrosis and adhesions.

Our c-section scar therapy sessions include;

  • A comprehensive consultation to obtain your scar history

  • Posture assessment

  • Movement assessment

  • Scar assessment

  • Abdominal assessment

  • External pelvic floor assessment

  • Manual scar massage techniques

  • Use of specialist scar equipment (where appropriate)

  • Advice on c-section products

  • Hydration advice

  • A scar rehabilitation plan

What Does Treatment Include?
Depending on your assessment, your treatment plan may include:

Scar therapy
Hands-on treatment to improve the mobility, sensitivity and appearance of your scar - reducing tightness, breaking down adhesions and desensitising areas of numbness.

Core rehabilitation
A progressive programme to reconnect and rebuild your deep abdominal muscles - the ones most directly affected by C-section surgery.

Pelvic floor assessment & treatment
External assessment of pelvic floor and diaphragm function, addressing symptoms such as leaking, heaviness, pressure or difficulty returning to exercise.

Movement & exercise rehabilitation
Guided return to everyday movement, postnatal exercise and activity - at the right pace for your body, not a generic timeline.

Massage
Therapeutic massage to address tension held in the abdomen, hips and surrounding areas - particularly common in women who have been unconsciously protecting their scar.

Return to running
A structured, evidence-based programme for women who want to return to running safely after a C-section, assessed and guided at the right time for their individual recovery.
